AND ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR 2022 ELECTIONS 

Summary timetable for the election process 

  • Monday 12th Sept: Nominations open 
  • Friday 14th Oct: Nominations close 

If more than one valid nomination is received for any position, then the timetable for voting will be as follows: 

  • Monday 17th Oct: Electronic voting to start 
  • Friday 4th Nov: Electronic voting to end 
  • Friday 11th Nov: Vote counting completed 
  • Thursday 17th Nov: Results announced at AGM held at the at the Annual Conference 

Thursday 17th Nov post-AGM: Newly elected Committee members take over their positions 

Vice President 

The Vice President will support the President in representing the ASSCR membership and will contribute to the vision and business strategy of the Society. As such, the Vice President should be a research leader in stem cells and an active member of the stem-cell community represented by the ASSCR. 

The Vice President will assume the position of President at the end of the President’s 2-year term of office. 

The Vice President should: 

Focus on knowing the ASSCR Rules and become familiar with the governance and operations of 

the Society in order to execute the role of President. 

Play an important role in the planning and preparation of annual meetings scheduled to occur 

once the Presidency is assumed. 

May become active within any of the Society’s subcommittees. 

Additional roles of the Vice President include the following:

1. Become Acting President when the President is absent from Australia and NZ. 

2. Chair Society meetings In the President’s absence. 

3. Represent the Society in the wider community, and undertake any other tasks required to run the Society in the President’s absence. 

4. Be prepared to become President should the President resign before the end of his/her term of office for any reason. 

5. Be a member of the Committee and attend all Committee meetings. 

6. Be a signatory for ASSCR cheques 

7. Assist in the preparation of the Annual Scientific Meeting and AGM 

8. Assist in the preparation of the Annual Report. 

Chair, Conference and Awards Subcommittee 

The Chair of the Subcommittee is required to undertake the following tasks in consultation with the Subcommittee team members. The role is a two-year elected position and requires knowledge of organising and successfully running small and large meetings (especially the Annual Meeting) in consultation with Local Organising Committee (of which the Chair will be a member), any Professional Conference Organiser involved (e.g., ICMS), and any network/society involved in running a joint meeting. 

Annual strategy and subcommittee volunteers 

  • Establish, on an annual basis, a team of volunteers from ASSCR members to assist with the work of the subcommittee. 
  • Establish an overall annual strategy for the work of the subcommittee, in cooperation with the full Committee. 
  • Ensure that subcommittee has broad representation, which reflects the expertise and experience within the ASSCR community. 
  • Ensure the subcommittee members are able to participate and contribute to the work of the subcommittee. 
  • Oversee postgraduate student/early-career researcher abstract submission, award process (conference travel award and other ASSCR awards), liaising with any contracted Secretariat support (e.g., ICMS). 
  • Liaise with the Treasurer and Secretariat to determine the number of Conference Travel Awards to be funded. 
  • Follow up with Award winners to make sure that all requirements of their award are met before funds are provided to them (e.g., bio, receipts). 
  • Identify candidates for postgraduate student/early-career researcher oral and poster presentation awards. 
  • Organise and coordinate judging of posters and oral presentations for postgraduate student/early-career research awards at the annual conference 
  • Assist with preparation of the Annual Report. 

Chair, Policy, Ethics and Translation Subcommittee 

The Chair of the Subcommittee is required to undertake the following tasks in consultation with the Subcommittee team members. The role is a two-year elected position and requires knowledge of the relevant national and international regulations and guidelines pertinent to stem-cell research and its clinical translation. 

Annual strategy and subcommittee volunteers 

  • Establish, on an annual basis, a team of volunteers from ASSCR members to assist with the work of the subcommittee. 
  • Establish an overall annual strategy for the work of the subcommittee, in cooperation with the full Committee. 
  • Ensure that subcommittee has broad representation which reflects the expertise and experience within the ASSCR community. 
  • Ensure the subcommittee members are able to participate and contribute to the work of the subcommittee. 
  1. Assist the ASSCR Committee in the development of policy related to facilitating stem-cell research and its clinical translation in Australasia including: a. Drafting submissions to public consultations in response to calls from government or other bodies. b. Monitoring developments in the field and bringing these to the attention of colleagues. 
  2. Assist the ASSCR Committee by drafting policy related to core activities and operations of the Society. 
  3. Provide ways for Members to engage in issues associated with regulation and policy development in stem-cell science including: a. Contributing to the program of the annual conference. b. Disseminating topical information and key developments to Members through liaison with other ASSCR Subcommittees. 
  4. Assist in forging links for ASSCR with relevant charities, industry, clinicians and academic bodies to advance stem-cell research and clinical translation including: a. Establishing a national network with clinicians and industry involved in stem-cell therapy. b. Tracking and promoting regulated (ANZCTR listed) clinical research activity in Australasia. 
  5. Enhance public understanding of stem-cell science, its potential benefit and current limitations by assisting the ASSCR Committee to develop and deliver special educational initiatives. 
  6. Assist with preparation of the Annual Report and the activities of other Subcommittees as required. 

Chair, Career Development and Junior Investigators Subcommittee 

The Chair of the Subcommittee is required to undertake the following tasks in consultation with the Subcommittee team members. The role is a two-year elected position and requires close interaction with ECRs at both the postgraduate, postdoctoral, and research assistance levels, and the ability to organise events (e.g., at the Annual Meetings) which help foster their development as researchers. 

Annual strategy and subcommittee volunteers 

  • Establish, on an annual basis, a team of volunteers from ASSCR members to assist with the work of the subcommittee. 
  • Establish an overall annual strategy for the work of the subcommittee, in cooperation with the full Committee. 
  • Ensure that subcommittee has broad representation, gender balance, and which reflects the geography, expertise and experience within the ASSCR community. 
  • Ensure the subcommittee members are able to participate and contribute to the work of the subcommittee. 

1. Co-ordinate development of an ECR event at the annual conference. 

2. Co-ordinate development of local and/or state-based ECR events (e.g., member training, social events, state-based EMCR conferences in co-ordination with other executive committee members) 

3. Join the ASSCR’s National Stem Cell Conversation team as a moderator (if additional moderators are required),and liaise between the ASSCR and the local Stem Cell Conversation committee. 

Other responsibilities 

Assist with preparation of the Annual Report.
